Hi ! My son is 7 months old. I've been giving him solids before his milk, as discussed with my nurse, she said it didn't matter if I gave him breastmilk or formula (we do both) first or after the solids. And of course since I see what he drinks when he gets a bottle, sometimes it's not even 3oz. So needless to say, his stools are pretty hard to pass. Poor little guy forces pretty hard. I've tried to nurse or bottle before the solids, but then he won't eat any solids and doesn't take more than 3-4 oz anyway. Should he be taking 5-7oz at his age ? Has anyone gone through this ? Any advice for a first time mom ?

I disagree with your nurse's instructions. Breastmilk or formula should always be offered BEFORE solids. Solid foods are mostly for fun and practice in the first year. Baby should still be getting at least 75% of his nutrition from breastmilk or formula for the whole first year. I'd suggest nursing him and then offering him some solids about halfway between when you think his need nursing session would be. (Say 1 hour after he nurses, offer him some bananas for example.)

I have never heard of a Doctor wanting solids before fluids at such a young age. I would call up to the office and speak to your pediatrician or another nurse and see what they say. I always gave my baby a bottle before meals because that's what she needs the most at this point. No worries, you're doing great as a mom, I just think maybe you got a little bit of wrong information. Good luck with everything.

well, I can say this, my baby was drinking around 7-8 oz bottles 6oz with cereal, and only eating one "solid" meal a day. He STILL had a hard time passing stools! anyway, if you baby doesnt want more than 3 oz then so be it. now, try feeding your son prunes. that always helped mine.

I give my son half of his bottle followed by solids and then the other half of his bottle. He usually doesn't want the second half of his bottle too much either. My son's pediatrician said as long as he get at least 26oz of formula a day; he is fine. I would discuss the item further with your son's pediatrician...
