Definitions:
Shoreline is the perimeter of the land along the water's edge, measured to the closest exactness possible. Shoreline is, therefore, usually longer for a particular location than is its coastline.
Coastline follows the general line of the coast, but sometimes, in the case of small inlets or bays, the coastline is measured as running directly across the bay or inlet to rejoin the coastline on the opposite side. Coastline is not measured as precisely as is shoreline.

If by most you mean longest and by 48 states yuo mean the continental united states then the state would have to be florida with california coming in a close second. The staste with the smallest coastline is Rhode island.

Okay, you do know there are 50... right? Just checking...

And yes, Alaska is indeed one of the "continental" United States. We are not "contiguous" with the "lower 48" states, but we are on the same North American continent. Only Hawaii is not part of the "continental" U.S.

I'm a little sensitive about this. I've actually had vendors refuse to ship merchandise to my address in Alaska because they "don't ship overseas". My wife had one cosmetics company tell her that they could only sell merchandise to citizens of the United States. And my personal favorite... a U.S. Customs agent in Seattle in 2001 would not allow us to re-enter the U.S. on our return from a visit to Victoria B.C. because we didn't have a passport and we were not U.S. citizens because we lived in Alaska. I'm not joking, a U.S. Customs agent! Unbelievable!

If your question was meant to ask which State has the most coastline the correct answer is Alaska with 6,640 miles of coastline. If you meant which contiguous State has the most coastline, I think that's Florida with 1,350 miles.

I'm sorry, but the best answer just isn't true. He's claiming Maine has more coastline than Michigan. Seriously, look at a map. It's not even close. I looked on websites for Michigan and Florida and Michigan had more coast (3288 mi) and Florida has something like 2276 mi
