Acne is caused by an excess of male hormones known as androgens. These androgens cause the oil glands to pump out excess oil, which then clogs the pores and bacteria builds up causing acne. Stress and hormonal fluctuations can worsen the symptoms. Medications to reduce the amounts of androgens, such as Yasmin, Diane 35 and Spiro can help, as well as oral antibiotics to reduced bacteria and topical treatments such as benzoyl peroxide, Retin A and salycic acid. I think it is from the hormones in the skin. I used to constantly wash my face and it seemed to make the condition worse.
I quit doing that and I don't know if it helped or if I grew out of it, but it is completely gone.
