Severance is at the SOLE discretion of the employer. They didn't have to pay ANYONE any severance. However, you don't have to be forced into the job... you can quit and do something you're more qualified (or satisfied) doing.

You need to talk to Human Resources at your company. They may be able to find another position that you are qualified for or arrange for severance pay. You might also ask why you were not notified about your position being eliminated.
If you CAN do the job you are being transferred into, do it. It will be another plus on your resume and the work experience will broaden your knowledge of what you can and can't do.
It may be they expect to train you for that position. OJT is good.

I would hope that your company would be able to offer you a position that you are qualified for. In the case that they don't and if they don't offer you a severance my suggestion would be to take the position they did offer you and begin a search for a new job. Good Luck either way!

They are probalby only offer severance pay to those who were not offered an alternative position.
You company either has complete faith that you are capable of the job, even if you are doubtful. Or they are hoping you will quit on your own. The latter wouldn't make since if they are offering severence to those they let go.
Have confidence in your abilities. Take notes and do your best. I am sure in time you will be fine.
