If anybody is smart enough to know the truth they are smart enough to know that they do not, and CAN NOT know everything. Anybody who thinks they know everything knows very little. When someone answers a question on here, if somebody is paying attention, they (hopefully) learn something. There are no guarantees that the persons asking the question, but if they learn something only 50% of the time, then at least half the time they are doing somebody some good. I think that people ask questions on here for a lot of reasons, but I know I've helped out a few people, and that means that I did something. Its not mental masturbation then, AND I learn things by answering their questions (sometimes) so it benefits me as well as them.

I don't wear pants,... I prefer skirts.
Ummm,... I know that I know a few things, I enjoy sharing my knowledge with people who care to accept it for what it is. They can easily chose to not accept it, and go with someone else's answer - just as easily.
I know that I don't know everything. I freely admit it. Though there are a few things that I do know, I may know more about than some other person. It may be because I have a little more experience or a little more "knowing" than the other person. There are others who will know more than me, I don't have a problem with that. There will Always be someone who "knows" more than me somewhere in this great big world we live in and share with everyone else.
Its the jealous and jaded, who know they don't know what they want to know, but want to be a "Know-it-all" but are too cheap to go and get the knowledge of knowing, either through study on their own or going to a place of higher learning. The "wannabees" that make stupid remarks, are annoying I agree. But people are people, we're all not perfect, some are better and some are worse.
The best that we can do, is to just try to get along and share knowledge, to make the world a better place for everyone, not to hoard knowledge just to aggravate and mock each other over some cheap thrill to be better than the next person.
Did that help sweetie?
cheers

I'd say it's both. Many great minds have changed history and the way the common person views the world. This is evident in people like Socrates,Einstein,Copernicus and people like Martin Luther King(no I'm not a *****) and the list goes on and on.The problem is that many people cannot comprehend the science, philosophy or ideals of many of these great people. If you"re referring to YA then I'd have to say that some people are being helped but others just game for points and choose their friends answers while some are so ignorant to the subject in which they inquire so they may choose the worst most absolutely wrong answer because it supports whatever hearsay the know of etc etc

I don't think this site is about "smarty pants", everyone has knowledge or experience in different areas. This just gives us a quick way to get a variety of answers for any given question giving us a larger pool to see which strikes us as the best answer for a given situation we might be addressing.

I think Sigmund Freud would have a hay day with your question. However, to answer your question, I feel some of us do good and some of us are simply exercising our mental agility or focusing our beliefs. Each person will obviously have their own reason. I’m not out here to change the world. I’m here to enjoy Answers for what it is, an electronic community for quasi-social interaction.

I use to have a friend that would say "stop mentally masturbating!" Maybe "we" do no good at all, maybe "we" do some good. At the very least it is entertaining and passes the time. Otherwise, I would be forced to clean my pool today and I really don't want to.
Take Care

You see you have some attention.
You seem to have experience to get some.
I hope you are happy of that.
Hope love!
Love is much bigger than the word love.
We always go to do good in a way or in an other.

I think we may not learn from other people's mistakes, but their experience may prevent us from making the same mistakes. Life experience is the best way to solve a problem, and since people from all over post answers here, you may find a resolution that you can't find anywhere else!
