Where do human beings fit on the list as far as "most numerous species" on earth?...I'm not talking about insects. I would have to assume that humans are very high on the list - we populate the entire world (the land part of it anyway) & we have no natural predators. There are 6.5 billion people on earth...how does this compare with other species? Are we the most populous mammal? If we are - what mammal would be second? Other than specific endangered species - I can't find too much info on the net about estimates of the world's population for a given species of animal (other than humans, obviously).

Actually in the Animal kingdom, we are relitive "Johnny - come - lately's"... And there aren't that many of us compared to other animals.

Basically the rule is, the larger the animal, the fewer there are:
Elephants = Very few, they can be counted
Cows = Many, but we could take a census we could.
Dogs = We might have to estimate
Mice = We only know about the ones we see

If you count fish? I think the tiniest *true* fish (with bones) is only a milimeter or two long...How many of those are there in the Ocean? Who knows.

So far as I know, I think Mice are the most numerous Mamal.
The dominant species measured by biomass? Fungus.

1st you said species, then you say mammals,
it would be interesting to see a list of the most by population rank,
i'm sure we outrank most large species,
but those litte guys like mice and squirrels can fit a lot of population in a small area...
there's still a lot of woodland on the planet.
i wonder about the cow/human population too?

not even close ( we are large and take up a lot of territory ) ( for mammels we would be outnumbered by rats alone )
