There are so many game consoles out there and I don't know which one is best and also age-appropriate. They already have a Super Nintendo, but I would like then to have a newer system as well.

I'd suggest getting a game cube. It has the most kid friendly games available and it will be a big step up in "power".

However, take in mind that this christmastime is going to really push the "next gen" consoles (if the PS3 comes out anyway) and the price of older consoles (ps2, xbox, gamecube) might go down somewhat.

ALSO, nintendo is releasing a new system this year called the Wii. It has a sort of different approach to gaming that your kids may enjoy where the controller acts as a motion sensor (if you move it up and down the guy on the screen moves instead of pushing buttons) Granted we as the public don't know how this console is yet (since it isn't out) and it might suck.

Virtually any Nintendo game system would be good for kids. The majority of Nintendo games are geared towards the younger crowd, so you would have a lot of games to choose from.

A Gamecube would be good or possibly a Nintendo 64 if you find one really cheap ($50 referbished at my local shop with 2 games).

I would avoid the Wii for now as young kids may not like the new controllers, which may get broken or they just won't like them.

The game cube has many more child friendly games than the other systems that I know of, plus the controller is smaller and easier to handle than other consoles...

if you're willing to wait, the wii is coming out towards the holidays, and that console is going to be motion-sensor based. And it's going to be cheap from rumors, possibley

The amount of games with the rating E is dwindling for the Sony and Microsoft based systems. Nintendo has always and I anticpate will always be the most kid friendly system. The GameCube offers a wide variety of gaming with kid-friendly controls.

The Nintendo Gamecube is good for that age range. The games for the X-Box and PS series of consoles are geared towards older gamers.
