Your car has a charcoal vapor canister that prevents petrol fumes from getting out of your cars fuel system into the atmosphere. The canister or vapor lines probably developed a leak.

Its either one of three things
1. someone spilt petrol inside the car.
2. There is a hole in the exhaust and in the undersealing of the car floor and its coming through.
3. There is a small hole in the top of petrol tank and its coming through the undersealing and car floor.

It will need repairing, You smell petrol and its a problem. Any local garage will be able to help you out. I normally take mine to where i get my MOT done.

Buy a car air freshener. If that doesn´t work then buy more and more until you can´t smell the petrol.
Seriously if you can smell petrol it is not a good sign. Have all the fuel lines checked, the smallest of gap can be dangerous.

Check the 'jute' material under you carpet and inside your trunk. Sounds like it is wet and producing the order. After you dry out the car, use a Ozone type air cleaner, then 'Fabreeze' to remove whats left.

IT may be something in the Catalytic converter.. The taxicabs I drive have that smell of rotten eggs, and it is not a very pleasant smell.
