Hello,

I got my license when I was 22. Before, I couldn't afford a car, so it was no use becoming a paper driver. For a half year I drove some of my friends' cars, so before I had mine I already knew a few types.
I don't say it's wrong to get a license ASAP, but because I was older than the others going for the license in my class, I had the advantage of getting used to learning a lot, so the rules were a piece of cake. As an electrical engineer student dealing with automotive electronics, I knew the car I was driving better than the instructor himself ;D. It helps a lot learning to drive when you fully understand everything that happens inside and outside the car. I bought an old RWD car, on which I was able repair everything (except the bodywork and machining engine components). I bought her at the wintertime, after one week I felt the car like a second skin, drifting around abadoned roads. :D

So, when you want to be a good driver it's not enough to start early without having the ability to learn from your mistakes. When you are young, you tend to lack self-criticism, which stands in your way becoming better. I've seen a lot of people taking a pride in driving for xx years, but then it turned out she/he is still unable to do parallel parking, going reverse or even going to places where she/he has never been (because he/she's got a problem with taking her/his bearing and driving at the same time ...).
So years of practice means nothing without gathering experiences during this time.

So, start as soon as you can and try to be the one who:
-knows the rules
-obeys the rules
-knows the car
-loves the car (machines have soul, too :D)
-dares to expand the limit of her/his own, but only at the appropiate time and place. And make it gradually!

Even if the parents doesn't allow the drive a car, you can start with learning the rules and technical stuff about cars. The more you know, the likely that your father changes his mind.

Good luck!

Regards

I know there has been debate about making the legal driving age 18 due to the number of accidents 16 year olds have. I believe the added maturity helps, but experience is what is needed most. I think 16 is fine if you have had a drivers permit. I also agree that during the first 6 months the driver should only drive during the day and should not drive with other teens only. You dad loves you and knows the risks of driving a 2000 lb weapon. I think everyone makes mistakes when driving, it just seems the 16 year olds make the mistakes they don't get to learn from.

I started driving when I was 15. My dad actually let me drive for the first time in his Cadillac. I drpve all over the road, weaving in and out and almost gave my mom a heartattack.

Best age to get a license is when you're legal. 16 in CA. The more you drive, you better you'll become.

The best age is 18. You should try to go to driving school plus at your age you can save on the insurance. Go to www.driving school.com you can find a school in your area.

I got mine as soon as I turned 16 1/2. That is how old you have to be to get your license in CT anyway. I went as soon as I could.
