Well as you know, the US was originally populated largely by European immigrants. In Catholic Europe, marriage was regarded as a sacrament, but in Anglo-Saxon England before the Norman Conquest, it was regarded as a family arrangement, with the view of enlarging land holdings, creating bonds of "kinship" (extremely important in Anglo-Saxon society) and acquiring wealth. For example in Anglo-Saxon literature it was said that "a king will buy a queen". However Anglo-Saxon society had a flexible attitude to marriage, and so readily accepted divorce, and that meant that a wife could find herself discarded and "sent back to her kin", if a better (i.e. wealthier and better connected) prospect came along. In turn, her replacement could find the same thing happened to her. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, marriage came to be regulated much more strictly, and passed from the regulation of the "state" to that of the church. Essentially it was all about land tenure which Norman society was founded upon, and ensuring that you and your wife produced legitimate heirs to whom your land and property would pass. It took a few more centuries before marriage became as regulated in England and Wales as it is now and well into early modern history, just exchanging a promise to wed could be legally binding. It was not until the mid 20th century that the English law of "breach of promise" was repealed so that you could no longer sue someone for failing to honour a promise to marry you.

Hope this answers your question!

Not sure where it came from exactly, but it goes way way back.

The ancient Greeks had it, the ancient Romans had it, and the ancient Egyptians had it. Marriage exists because ancient societies needed a system of rules to handle the granting of property rights, and the protection of bloodlines. The institution of marriage handled that. The church didn’t get involved until the 1500’s when the Council of Trent (a Cathoic Church thing) felt that someone should witness the affair. In other words, the tie between religion and marriage is a leftover from when there was no separation of church and state.

Adam and Eve. Look man some work out some don't. I've been married 16 years and we love each other like crazy. The problem is that you've got the 7 year itch. That's when you want your life to be like before you were married and could go after every honey you wanted. Just try and get over this hump and you'll be fine. Try and take the routine out. Change your schedules, give yourselves some time alone and talk man, very important to talk. Can't keep stuff cooped up it will drive you nuts. Talking to each other without interruptions is the best.

Good Luck Buddy !

In one form or another, marriage is found in virtually every society. The very oldest records that refer to it speak of it as an established custom. Despite attempts by anthropologists to trace its origin (and test the hypothesis of primitive promiscuity), evidence is lacking.

In Western societies, marriage has traditionally been understood as a monogamous union, while in other parts of the world polygamy has been a common form of marriage. Usually this has taken the form of polygyny (a man having several wives) but a very few societies have permitted polyandry (a woman having several husbands).

God made man and woman, thefore a man should leave his family and cleave to his wife.

GOD DID.

If you think it sucks then you have problems in your marriage you and your wife are not dealing with. Get marriage counseling and fix the problem.

You have to communicate. You can't be afraid to talk to eachother about your issues. You are supposed to be best friends.

I guess you can have a chat with God upon your judgement day about his idea sucking. Not to sure he is going to appreciate it.

I've been married for eight years with three kids and my life is wonderful. We have our arguments, but they get cleared up and our marriage becomes even stronger.

You have to be mature about your state, if not then you will lose the marriage and your wife.

I hope the best for you and your wife.

Now I'm no expert on marriage, but I think it must be stopped, its evil and serves no purpose, you can have a good healthy relationship without a piece of paper saying your stuck to someone.

Marriage is an ordinance ordained by Heavenly Father. It's a blessing, and if you are unhappy then do yourself and your wife a favor and end it.
