The Romans (in general) were more practical people, and this philosophy of life spread from the place of origin (Latium) because of who they were, and all the historical factors that made this original group of people successful. They were very different than the people who created Classic Greek civilization---the geography was totally different, the history of the regions, all the influences. The really interesting thing is to go back before the Romans to the Etruscans (north of Rome)---there you will find an advanced (and lost) civilization that might have been on a par with Classic Greece. But, the Romans were generally "problem-solvers", hands-on people. They also were forced to invent many practical things that the Greeks were not.
They excelled at the art of realistic portraiture, civil engineering, and borrowed most of their other art from the Greeks, who they conquered and enslaved.

From early times the Romans had felt the artistic influence of Greece. In 146 BC, when Greece was conquered by Rome, Greek art became inseparably interwoven with that of Rome. "Greece, conquered, led her conqueror captive" is the poet's way of expressing the triumph of Greek over Roman culture. The Romans, however, were not merely imitators, and Roman art was not a decayed form into which Greek art had fallen.
To a large extent the art of the Romans was a development of that of their predecessors in Italy, the Etruscans, who, to be sure, had learned much from the Greeks (see Etruscans). Nor were the Romans themselves entirely without originality. Though their artistic forms were, for the most part, borrowed, they expressed in them, especially in their architecture, their own practical dominating spirit.

the greeks started their civilisational development much earlier and having the slaves do all their work, they had time to relax on agoras and talk about the meaning of life (that's how we have philosophy f.e.). it's logical that they were more spiritual and that u can see on the examples of today's forms of greek and italian spirituality - why are catholic saits beautiful like Appolo and the Orthodox one are represented as if they'd been on a rigorous diet and with horrible wrinkles and sad expressions? Catholic art is more anthropomorphe while Orthodox is considered to associate on the christian sufferings trough the history.

The Greeks had to stretch to paint or sculpt, because they were always behind someone.
