I like rubies and sapphires. They are really pretty. Go to a jewelry store and takea look at all the stones they have there and then see which color grabs your eye.

I'm not sure you save that much money going into sapphires or emeralds etc.
While the global manipulation of precious stone pricing annoys me as an economist, its the way it is.
What about diamonds repulses you? I assume its the concern about 'blood diamonds', rather then ecological footprint (which all stones can have). If that is your concern, you should be able to get a ring made from a canadian diamond. There are some fairly significant diamond mines now operating in the canadian arctic.

Like the above answers indicate, chose a color of stone you like. Emerald may not be a good choice because quality emerald costs more than diamonds, and are too fragile for wearing in a ring. All quality ruby and sapphire (their chemically the same except for colorant) wears well in a ring, but may be nearly as expensive as diamond.
I also encourage you to shop together, and see what you find pleasing. Today people can pretty much do what they want.
Look at Moissanite. It is very diamond-like, it sparkles, and is almost as tough as diamond (look at it in strong white light against white paper. Some Moissanite tends to have a green tint to it you will want to avoid).
Good luck and God Bless.

Whatever you like. Mine, wedding ring is diamonds. But I always told my husband I would take anything. Truth be known, my favorite stone is Amethyst. Sapphires are beautiful as wedding rings also. Go shop around or look on the Internet. Or get personalized bands. I think those are cool. My parents have bands they designed that symbolize things to them. That only they know. It makes it very special and is not so commercialized. Look around, find out what you like

Any stone that you like! I, too, wanted to stay away from diamonds - the mark up is ridiculous! I used a garnet, because that is my birthstone and I like the color, but thought about an emerald or a sapphire too. Pearls are too soft to wear everyday, as are opals, but just about anything else you like would be fine!

I like the no stone engagement ring that I have. It's titanium, it has a beautiful design and is a major attention getter. Try a band it might work.

Tanzenite is very pretty and it changes color. I've seen a lot of wedding bands made with it and they are very impressive!
I actually thought of tanzenite but love diamonds and couldn't break the tradition!

Do what my friends did - instead of deciding what stone they wanted and then going to a jeweler's, they spent a lot of time hitting antique shops and estate sales. They looked at a lot of old, heirloom rings. I can't remember what they settled on, but she loved it.
