You can't 'see' the body language of the respondents.
A lot of our communication is non-verbal and when you're face-to-face you can pick up all these cues, but you can't in this sort of medium.
I suspect that a proportion of the 'rude' answers you're complaining about would be less of an issue in a verbal/visual communication where you could pick up these cues. Some people use 'emoticons' to try to convey the idea behind their written words but they don't always work very well.
Of course there are some people who are just rude and ill-mannered, just ignore them and hope that they will get bored and leave the rest of us in peace.

Yes it is annoying, either a serious answer or a funny one is OK but sarcasm and rudeness are uncalled for. If they feel that way about your question they should not answer it at all. These people must be the kind you would not want to know, the kind that go out of their way to cause upset no matter what, ignore them , put it down to ignorance, because that is what they surely are, have a nice day,!!!!!

Where does it say anywhere in the terms and conditions that it's meant to be a bit of fun - and if somebody puts up a perfectly stupid question or answer, how else do you expect people to react? They get fed up with it all the time.

Some people use being basically annonymous to be far ruder than they would be when they are in person. The advantage of online is that it is easier to ignore those who are rude than it is in more personal situations.
I think it would be worse without the thumbs up/thumbs down rating system.

Just ignore it babe, some people just get off on being rude and acting all superior. Some people are probably just trying to be funny too and don't mean to be rude - but you can't hear tone of voice on here unfortunately.
