poetry uses very choice words. Rather than writing a story, specific words are used to depict things. Because we don't have extra linking words to tell us what we want to know, we must use imagery in our heads. Words to Poetry are like Paints to a Canvas.

It is used to convey meaning to the reader. Since unlike prose, poetry generally does not allow an expanse of words to spell everythng out, so often imagery is employed by the poet to create symbolic pictures of their meaning.

So you can see the picture in your mind to help you capture and feel the poetic story told in words. A good example is when a poet is reciting his/her poems to the audience and they envision in their mind what story he/she is telling. It can be a beautiful story if you can envision the words spoken.
