actually, i heard an interview w/ jeff probst the other day.. and he was saying that a lot of people seem very "ethnically" proud, and so at first they would try to win for their race....and then the game twists and u have to vote out a member of ur race, and then ultimately the game turns into an INDIVIDUAL game, not a group thing....
my take on it is that they were going for shock value, but seriously speaking.. a LOT of people are extremely proud of their "race"...and will back up and ally w/ their race/ethnicity, even if that particular person is not necessarily a Good Person.. u know? so, it makes for a really interesting social study....in a money making, commercialized, TV/Reality show..!! haha. but yeah, when he explained it like that, i understand what he means... it is an individual game, and usually people have allies within their groups. but having an ally in someone that has the same ethnic background as you is actually harder to "break", and that is all what that game is about (very mental... u have to be sneaky and trick people or be nice and help, at the sake of ur own safety , blah blah). i don't even watch the show, but i think in theory it's pretty interesting....and controversial :).

The motivation for the "race" thing is the same as for the series - sensationalism. It's the tabloid era and way of thinking: if you can sensationalize something, it'll get plenty of publicity (and ratings) without your having to put any real effort into it. Personally, as a Black woman, I am offended not only by the production itself, but by the fact that they found someone to participate.

The race issue is controversial and controversy likes company and raises the ratings. Wait until the winning team shows up.. let see whats the new fuzz.

Ratings, of course. Their attendance was probably dwindling and they needed something to bring their audience back. Would it be in the news this much if it was just a new season of Survivor? Probably not.

The creator, Burnnett, says he wants to more or less debunk racial stereotypes.

controversy............and its ratings month........sooooooooo that gets viewers.........to either complain about it later.......or to see what happens.........either way........its advertising dollars........since people watch(similar to Howard Stern on old radio shows).........you tune in.....to see what happens next.
