EIDE (or Extended IDE) is the older technology and has been around since the first PCs that had hard drives.

SATA (or Serial ATA) is the newer technology and is much, much faster. The problem is your older PC might not have the SATA capabilities. You'd have to install a SATA card in one of the slots and plug in that way.

Your best bet is to upgrade to a new pc (at least the motherboard) and go with SATA.

Highly doubtful that your 2 year old computer will support SATA since it's only been widely available for about a year. You wouldn't see much perforamnce difference between the two in any case: SATA is about 50% faster in data transmission at best, because the limiting factor is seek time -- how fast the heads on the drive can find the desired data. This has more to do with drive speed than transmission. Your current drive probably runs at 5400rpm (check the specs with the manufacturer). If the new drive is, say, twice the size of the old, you'll want a 7200rpm unit as seek time will be even slower at 5400 -- more disk space to search.

Nope - can't do SATA drives on the system without SATA controller card. And since we only have 3 slots to expand with you might not have enough room for one.

I have this exact same system and it's really pretty sweet for the price - $350 two years ago. Of course I added memory, two DVD burners and 256mb Sapphire Vid card, firewire card from my old system.

If you can't afford a new system yet, go for an EIDE Hard Drive and max out the memory - Manual states 1GB max (2X512MB) but Crucial lists it as capable of 2GB.

Also, best upgrade you can get is the 3.06Ghz Northwood P4 with HT 533Mhz FSB - this is the ONLY 478-pin 533Mhz P4 made with HT. Still running about $200 these days since they were so limited. If you ever find one cheap get it.

EIDE is a parallel technology and uses a completely different cable than SATA. SATA is newer and is becoming the standard. If you want to go with SATA, make sure you motherboard has SATA ports on it.

the faster the better in' it
i would suggest a pci card to sata. where you can connect up to 4 sata drives on your relatively old machine.
i hope that this solved your problem.
