there are quite a few that fit your needs out there. i guess if you wanted a domestic brand, the dodge caliber or the chevy hhr. each has their down falls but each is about 16,000 or so. if you wanted a import , the x-b is awesome but the looks strange, maybe retro, the fit(honda) would do nicely, or the new nissan versa. the later 2 have proven track records with the brands and aren't to very expensive, maybe 15,000 or so. the fit is also quite versitale in that it can be configured in a number of ways, same for the x-b. look at the consumer reviews at yahoo auto's or edmunds. consumerguide.com has good information on each vehicle you may want. consumer reports might be a good place to start looking, if you don't have they're 06 buying guide you might look at one at your local library or friends.
i just got an 06 gls 4x4 hyundia(tuscon) for a little more than 18,000 but a great warranty.
good luck

I feel a toyota mini van would be the best buy for two reasons, first, toyota is a good make and they last almost a lifetime and 2nd, they are good on gas. Look at the Rav-4, $20,850, 30 hwy mph, 5 passenger. Next,is the Toyota Sienna, $23,775, 26 hwyn mph, 7-8 passenger.

Minivans are good values for what they offer - ugly as puke, but most appropriate for a family, and excellent buys if you buy one 2 or 3 years old. For being easy on gas, get one with the base engine since you don't need anything more anyway.
I hate them, but I know of a few bachelors who buy and drive them simply because they can get them cheap - of course they also have their sports cars and pickups, but for normal getting around without inpressing the girls, you can't beat them.

A Subaru, they are great on gas mileage and with all-wheel drive you can really get around. They handle awsome too.

DONT do Toyota OR the Mini Van!!!!!! Neither one are safe enough compaired to what is available. Depending on what your price range is I would be looking at new or pre-owned German or Swiss imports. Hands down, the safest and most of them as reliable as a Japanese import.
