Men are becoming victims of body image fascism as well as women. I wouldn't say it's a product of the attitudes of the opposite gender, more a product of capitalism. Women spend loads on beauty products, men traditionally haven't. But if you can get men to buy magazines obsessing about how to look better, and get them to buy expensive moisturiser etc., then the relevant manufacturers can make money out of men as well as women. One symptom of this is that male anorexia is on the increase.

Males are expected to be more muscular than in the 20th century; this can be seen with the gradually-increasing muscularity of Action Men figures, cartoon heroes, etc.
