My period started mid-July, and has some days when it is light and some days when it is medium, there were just a few when it was heavy. I am starting to get worried, and honestly I'm just sick of it. I don't have an OBGYN here - I am living in a foreign country where it would be hard for me to get to see a doctor. Is it absolutely necessary, or should I just wait for it to pass.

You should see a doctor as soon as possible. If you are on a hormone based birth control it may just need to be changed. When I had Norplant I had my period for almost a year straight and had to have it removed. If you are not on any hormones it may indicate another health problem. If you may be pregnant it may be a sign that the embryo is not healthy and your body is trying to flush it out. In that case it could lead to an infection. A doctor would have to remove the embryo.
You may need to have your lining removed (D&C) and when it grows back the problem is usually corrected (it's like rebooting your uterus). Any time you bleed for so long you run the risk of becoming anemic. See a doctor and get it resolved.

I had that same problem when I was around 20 years old (15yrs ago). I saw some doctors and they said it was stress. Assuming you aren't on the pill, if you are, it's probably time for a pill change.
