You can change the processor without doing anything to Windows, unlike a motherboard.

You can change 5 items of hardware before needing to re-install XP. The cpu counts as 1 if it is a single core cpu. The motherboard always tries to reinstall multiple components if you replace it therefore making XP think its serveral pieces of hardware.

I haven't done it in a while, but I dont think you can change the processor without reinstalling windows. In several taptops, windows wouldn't work after switching the processor, and needed to be reinstalled. I think windows verifies the processor serial number when it is installed. If it doesn't match when it starts up, it causes problems, or wont work.

I put my XP disk in a completely different computer (different speed processor, memory, motherboard, the works) and XP recognized it all and works fine

this is what you do you have windows xp on the hard drive . now you remove the hard drive and the dvd/rw/drive's and the ram card's/modem
then change the motherboard have a better. processor on it a ..

As long as you are installing a porcessor thats compatible with your mobo it shouldnt have an effect.

actually when you change a mobo you dont have to reactivate it you can just do an in place up grade.
