I think the ultimate experience for you would be to land in Boston, buy a very cheap, but reliable car, and drive around the country for two months. Down the eastern seaboard, into the South, across to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona.

Then LA with a side trip to Las Vegas, up the coast to San Francisco, then on to Oregon and Washington state. (Vancouver's great too, but it's in Canada). Across to Montana, down to Wyoming and Colorado. Across the Great Plains to St. Louis, up to Chicago, across the Midwest to upstate NY, then Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

You'll have put about 10,000-15,000 miles on the car, but that's a trip most Americans dream about taking.

I can only recommend places I've been...

Boston is lovely for a city break, especially in Autumn when you can venture out into the countryside and see the amazing colours of the trees. It's easy to get around and actually has some history unlike a lot of American places.

Yosemite is stunning and you can stay in nearby Mammoth which has beautiful walks and lakes. Las Vegas is an experience and you can do the Grand Canyon from there. You can see Redwoods near San Francisco, visit Alcatraz, annoy the sea lions lol

It depends on what you want to do. If you want beaches and heat visit Florida or Southern California. If you want big cities with lots of people, museums, theaters, etc. visit NY, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. If you want nature, we have many beautiful national parks, Yosemite, Everglades, Glacier, the Badlands, Great Smokey Mountains, there are so many. If you want history there is the oldest city in the US in St. Augustine FL, there are the wonderful museums in Washington DC and New York and every state has their own history. You can reserch each state on the web and decide where you would like to start.

Wow, that would really depend on what type of person you are, what kind of food you want, and what you want to do.
If you are the mad rush city type, you can't go wrong with New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or Atlanta.
If you love big cities, but want a more laid back feel, then go with San Francisco, Miami, Dallas, Austin, or San Diego.
If you are a nature fiend and want to see some great scenery and magnificent wildlife, there are GREAT national parks in Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, California, Alaska, Arizona, Washington (state, not DC), and Oregon.
If you want old world gentility and history, go with Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, or San Antonio.
I could truly go on and on. Again, it depends on what you want to experience and what type of pace you want to go at.

I agree you must see the big cities LA NY and Chicago all different in ways but similar in some. Drive through the midwest in August (Iowa, Illinois, Kansas) and see what the term "amber waves of grain " looks like. Pacific NW is cool too.We do have it all from oceans to desert, great forests and mega cities. Mountains and The Great Plains. You could travel here for a lifetime of vacations and not see it all.
