petrified wood is fossilized wood, so petrified forests are forests of fossils

I've been to a petrified forest. While it can be very *enchanting*, I don't think I would call it enchanted! It is a very natural process, described by several people above, where the trees fell down millions of years ago and were covered by sand rich in ash when the area flooded. The silica from the sand and colored by the minerals, over time, replaced the wood, making petrified or fossilized wood. It is usually very colorful and beautiful, but is not a standing forest. See the link below for what a large log looks like. There are several of these around the US and even in Greece!

Hopes this answers your question.

It is an ancient forest in which all of the long dead trees have been turned into petrified wood through the process of mineralization.

It doesn't mean 'the enchanted Forest'! Actually it is the opposite of it!

A petrified forest consists of TREES, INSECTS etc that have DIED & then been CHANGED into STONE over a long period of time. (Fossils of Trees, animals, insects etc etc))

Petrified wood is dead wood. So a petrified forest is a forest of dead trees. Trees that have been in a fire or something. So no, it is not nearly the same as an enchanted, or magical, forest.

No.

Petrified and enchanted are two VERY different things.

Petrified, means it has been turned to stone through time.

Enchanted is... well... NON-EXISTANT.
