well i think its because in the computer games you can do things you want to do in real life but cant like beat the crap out of someone ect. also you can control the computer game to some point and you cant in real life and we all like the ability to control something because sometimes our life is out of control.

Well, perhaps because there are a lot of people who want to do stuff they can't do in real life. For instance, I love being an super human with amazing powers who saves the world. In real life, I'm a (bored) 4th year Engg student.
Also, one may want to do things that are not exactly on the "right" side of the law... indulging the darker side of human nature.( think Mafia, GTA )
Sometimes , a person may want to "vent" their pent up stress by blowing stuff/people and still stay outta jail.
Well, there are plenty of reasons why people like games which "simulate" reality and these reasons vary from person to person. To each his own.

Go to a second hand computer store and buy the real oldies. Ive got an old megadrive and spectrum and youre right theyre better than these newer games. Too much focus on realism and big 'real' worlds. We live in the real world and can go outside if we want. Give me frogger any day

people want them to mimic real life, so they will mimic real life. If people wanted to drink orange juice and you gave them milk they would buy less, think about it, this is a business. You can still have your blips and sprites, go download an emulator.

Yes, but people don't want blips and blocks on the screen, they want good graphics and good graphics mean life-like images. The more life-like, the better the game. It makes the game more exciting because you can pretend you are actually fighting someone or killing Nazis or whatever.

That stuff is now old and boring and disapointing... the whole point in making it look real life is a challenge and will look really cool when it happens...
