I think Canadians are the friendliest (except Quebec) but I'm biased. However when my husband and I were broke down in Rochester (1987) we encountered some really nice people that helped us out and once back on the road and our system in the '66 van wasn't charging lots of people offered to give us a boost. At one point and practically broke a nice lady at a convenience store gave us food, $20, and let us charge our van off her car while it ran for an hour.
So my point is that there are friendly people everywhere.

As I haven't traveled that much but I think we (Americans) could not be the friendlist. I live in a city (Vegas) that hospitality is the business. I am lucky enough to not work in a big casino but the ppl I know loathe tourist...then they don't like when I tell them Hey no tourist= no jobs. The hospitality from McDonalds to the fanciest resort Bellagio is below standard...the workers act like you should be happy they are helping you as opposed to Hey thanks for the $ so I can feed my family.
I am sure other cultures are nicer and even others are ruder. I believe it goes by the place, the ppl you run into, and more importantly the person traveling. If you go somewhere and be an ****** then your going to be treated like one...you go somewhere with an open mind to learn their culture and your going to get nothing but respect.

It really depends on where you travel in the states.
I was lucky to drive through the South, and I found the people there to be incredibly warm, gracious and inviting. As friendly as the people of New Zealand who are the most friendly on the planet.
Northerners, however, are rude and offensive.

Depends on where in America you get your sample - many in the South are ultra-friendly. Still, in general the Swiss and Canadians would be at the top of the list.

hmmm... maybe we could also conclude the corollary.
i.e.
those who say "Americans are the unfriendliest people on earth" arent well travelled either.
each person has a unique experience.
it takes two to tango :-)

You can conclude anything you want, doesn't make it right or wrong. Opinions are exactly that...opinions.
I've heard it said that opinions are like assholes, everyone has one
