I was thinking about buying a used 1999 Merc Mystique with 130K miles. Does anyone know if these cars can go over 200K if the car had regular maintenance? Anyone own one?

On the other hand, I am driving a 1999 Ford Contour, really the same car. I've got over 230,000 miles on it. Aside from "wear items" like brake pads, tires, filters, etc. (and I do include timing belts in this category - one at 100,000 and one at 190,000), my total problem list is a heater blower and a cable assemby for driver's window.

Regularly serviced. Oil/filter every 5,000. Flushed tranny and radiator twice each - this is less frequent than manual. Most miles were Interstate driving.

Good car to drive - responsive, good steering. Will keep until it dies.

One note: Mine is the 2.0L 4. Don't know about the 2.5L V6.

YOUR TAKING A REAL BIG CHANCE ON SOMETHING WITH THAT MANY MILES ON IT, UNLESS YOUR GETTING IT FOR A SONG I WOULDN'T DO IT, YOU DON'T KNOW IF THE TIMING BELT HAS BEEN CHANGED OR ANY OF THE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE YOUR JUST TAKING THERE WORD FOR IT, MOST OF THOSE CARS WOULD BE LUCKY TO MAKE TO 200K.

Check to see if the timing belt and water pump has been changed. This is a big expense as far as labor goes. I have one that just blew a head gasket at 193,000

mercury MISTAKE you mean. lots of problems exist. do a carfax history report. do a back-ground check on maintenence, have a certified tech. look over the vehicle. see if the head has been off, see history for fuel pump problems. etc.....
