sugar in the tank was a really bad practical joke that guys would sometimes pull on others in the 60s and early 70s... It would gum up the engine requiring extensive repairs...
When fuel prices started going up in the 70s cars started designing locks for the gas caps to stop the practice of stealing gas by syphoning it out of the tank... so the sugar in the tank practical joke has gone away because all caps lock now...
I still occasionally hear about the potato on the tailpipe joke... fun, and not as damaging to the car...

Literally it means actually having sugar in the gas tank of your car, motorcycle, or other gas-powered vehicle. It does damage to the engine and causes a lot of problems and expensive repairs. In slang it means that someone is a male homosexual.

It all depends what you're talking about. If someone puts sugar in your tank it means they are pretty close to hating you. If someone says you have sugar in your tank and you are male, they're pretty much calling you gay.

If a guy says it to a girl "baby you got some sugar in your tank", Then 1 you got a nice *** and he wants to tap it, 2 he's trying to say you're not going anywhere for a while.
I heard it used in a bar once and that was my take on it.

Sugar in your car's gas tank means you have one less friend in the world and you need to get your tank cleaned out and change your fuel filter.

I think it means you need to go to a garage and get it flushed out because it could really damage your engine...the sugar will ruin your carburetor and seize up your engine. Some people put sugar in peoples tanks as an act of vandalism to ruin their engine.

I think it means that you have done something totally mortifying to a person and they are coming after you. Have you ever heard Don't weigh your sugar on my Scales? It is along the same lines as that.
