A Yahoo search for "bird identification" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 342,000 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek. Most of the websites on the first two pages of results utilize color photos to identify birds.

Sounds almost like a female red-headed woodpecker, but without a picture, can't be sure. Try looking it up on Yahoo! images.
