What I mean in my question is how can you tell if someone is a non orthodox white ethnic Jew, not someone of non-Jewish ethnicity who later converted to Judaism. I am just curious.

Well, Chinese Jews were really ethnic Jews. They settled in China long time ago to avoid persecution.

If you do not want to ask them directly if they are Jewish, then ask them if they know the date for the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashonah (September 22, 2006). Ask a question about politics or religion. But why are you curious whether a person is Jewish?

Ask them "hey, are you Jewish?" There's no real Jewish "look," and names can be deceiving. Unless the guy's name is like "Stanley Goldberg" or like, "Moshe Weinstein". Then he's probably one of ours. Then again, if someone has a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother, technically, they'd inherit his name without his inheriting his Jewishness.

Our people sometimes like to joke that we posess some sort of "Jewdar" ...you know, like "Gaydar," but for Jews. In any event, the so-called typical traits of Ashkenazi Jews are really more Eastern European than Jewish, and they're less typical than you'd think.

Jews, both born Jews and converts (who, assuming the convert in accordance with Torah law, are absolutely 100% Jewish) comprise a very ethnically diverse group. I've met White Jews, Black Jews, Hispanic Jews, Persian Jews, blond Jews with blue eyes, red-haired Jews with green eyes... you get the idea.

Most European jews (not all) are descendants of the khazars (the ashkenazi) which were a tribe of mongoloid race people (huns) from the area which is now Georgia, whose king converted them to judaism in the 7th century. Although their skin and hair colour would be the same as most other europeans they will have a more mongolian look to their eyes. To answer your question briefly, most european jews are not of hebrew (israelite) ancestory at all. The ones that are would not have a mongolion look to them.
