I have seen loads of new versions of virtual pets and wondered if anyone still actually uses them, how much time you actually need to devote to your tamagotchi so that it does not run away or die?

Great question.
I'm afraid I don't know of anyone, but there was a great scene in the Greenwing where the character on that had one and he'd kept it alive for about 10 years. He said would have been worth a fortune, then he goes and drops it in a glass of wine. Still makes me chuckle.
So I reckon it's definitely something you'd find on e-bay.

I hadn't thought about them in years until i saw my friend's daughter playing with one the other day. What a blast from the past! I think that they're more technical now, apparently you can link them up and they play with each other! They look more time consuming than real pets!

wow i haven't seen one in years. I used to have a really cool one that you could play basketball with. I had an official one but they were pretty boring. I thought they could only live for a maximum of 100 days

I gave my Tamagotchi to my Tabasco beanie baby, and haven't seen it since. I think Tabasco loaned it to Tickle Me Elmo....

I was a deprived child and never had one lol! you can still buy them in woolies and I was quite shocked at how expensive they are! I have one on my phone now (which I got for free) and it is really annoying coz it takes ages for it to grow up!!!

I still have an old one but damn, it's been so long I totally forgot about. Maybe it's time to be retro and pull it out again
