The difference in time is because it takes longer for the sound to travel then the light. That's why they say, the longer time it takes for you to hear the thunder after a lightnight strike it means the farther away the lightning was.

Because light travels at 186,282.397 miles per second which something like 670,616,629 MPH. Sound on the other hand is very slow...There are a lot of variables to consider but on average sound travels roughly 750 MPH

Light moves so much faster than sound that we can consider light instantaneous in daily experience, but sound is so very slow (in our atmosphere) that airplanes have gone faster for many years now.

I love pointing out things in such a simple way that you smack yourself on the head and say, "I knew that." Of course you did; you just had to put the things you know together.

Because light travels a lot faster than sound. The farther away the lightning is, the longer it takes the sound to reach your ears. (about 1 mile per sec.)
