how can we ask other countries not to have "nuclear" weaponds when we have them?

AND NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE ENOUGH TO WIPE OUT THE ENTIRE PLANET , BUT WE ARE THE "O N L Y " COUNTRY EVER TO USE NUCLEAR WEAPONS!???!?!? HOW DO WE JUSTIFY OWER POSSITION WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE /AND ACTING LIKE WE ARE BETTER AND MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYONE ELSE!?!?!?

ATTENTION EVRYONE: so far 14 responces [ thank you all] and i respect and understand ALL your sentiments... but none address the question as it is asked.. let me rephrase: how would you tell [lets say north korea] its ok for the the usa [ and its friends to have weapond[ by the way , pointed at YOU] but you can not..? you are our chif negotiator ... how do you convince them ? the one who convinces me gets the points.

well for one thing, it's not all other countries. There are other countries that do have nuclear weapons; Israel, russia, great britain to name 3. yes we do have enough to wppe out the entire planet if that was in our nature. But the U.S. is not a rogue country. our nature is one that helps other countries. If there is a catastrophe anywhere in the world you can look for the good ole u s of a to come to the rescue.

that is one reason we are a blessed country, because of our generosity and the fact that our nation was founded on biblical principles. God has truly blessed this nation. that is one reason that the USA has more advanced technology than any other country and is the youngest country. we are the youngest nation but far exceed any other country in weaponry and technology.

At the tine the A-Bomb was used, not the nuclear bomb, Japan
was trying to conquer the world; they bombed Pearl Harbor.

that attack was unprovoked. In the course of time, we got them back by dropping the A-Bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima and that brought World War 2 to an end. This really saved a lot of lives that would have been lost had the war drug on. Hope this has enlightened you somewhat.

Because while haveing nuclear capabilities we have (so far) had the descresion of when to use them and not to use them. In the instance of the bombing of Japan we used the bombs to decisivly end the war. A ground invasion of Japan would have killed many more people on both sides than the two bombs did. As for the other countries we ask not to have nuclear weapons because they have unstable governments and/or they are commited to the destruction of another country. There are several other countries that have nuclear weapons that keep us in check, but there is no check for someone willing to kill themselves and others for their cause. Finally we secure our nuclear weapons and keep them and the technology from being bought and sold on the black market. This cannot be ensured in other less stable nations.

Let's look at a metaphor. Who would you trust with a pistol, the only person in the group to ever have fired one, the people who have had one for years without feeling the need to fire it, or the guys who want their own becasue other people have them?

I guess it comes down to the case where we feel we would use these weapons responsibly, where as other countries may not use them in a responsible manner. Do you think terrorist organizations would hesitate to use Nukes if they had them. I guess it is sort of like giving a handgun to a child, where as the u.s. is trained in using a handgun, and responsible.

We worry that less stable nations, with radical governments will use nuclear weapons without all the safeguards and back up systems we, and other responsible nations have in place. That may not be true, but that is what we think.

We can't. Nobody ever said anything was suppose to be fair. Why do the Saudi's have all that oil and won't let us have it except for a fee?

It's just as scary to have Bush with his finger on the button, in my opinion, as any mental patient (myself included). So, it's not a fair system. Everybody just uses power as a pretext for being fair as a pretext for maintaining power.

The President of Iran is wanting to Kill ALL of Israel, even though he knows that Iran will then be wiped off the map as well.

But he does not care if his countrymen will all be martyrs.
