A calculator is unnecessary. Just set = 0 and factor.

x^2 -9x-36=0
(x-12)(x+3)=0
x=12 or x = -3

X^2-9x-36=0

x=[9+-square root of (81+4*36)]/2

x=[9+-15]/2

x=12 or x=-3
