At the end of movies, and more particularly, tv shows, why is the date of production always given in Roman numerals? Is this just a tradition, or is there some other explanation?

It's just a tradition. Some companies do use Arabic numerals, but mostly I think it's like some clockmakers--it started out that way because it looked more sophisticated.

In the early days of films it was thought that putting the year in Arabic numerals would mean people would be upset if they watched an 'old' movie. So they disguised the fact by using Roman numerals.

hey, why not?

plus I think at that time when the tradition started it was easy to do roman numerals as they didn't have to create the numbering system from scratch but could use existing letters instead.

probably tradition as everyone else said but i like it as it gives people an incentive to learn them. my dad taught me them when i was about 7 so i was always working them out and it felt good.
