This actually happened to me, I waited for them 30 mins and then I left a note on door stating I was there to start work at my appointed time and no one was there to let me in and to call me when I can get in to do my job. I then went home and waited for their call and they did call, I explained to them that I was there and I expected a full days pay and if this was going to happen often then I wanted a key or they can pay a full days pay and my gas, needless to say I got a key.

10-15 minutes. I didn't have a key or a phone number, so I'd leave a note on the door saying that I showed up, nobody was around, door was locked, and I'll be at home now if you need me.

If it happen more that once I would let someone who cared know. I would go home after 30 mins, also if I have a supervisors telephone number I would call them, if they let me know to wait I will wait but I better get paid for that time.

I would give someone a call first. I always carry phone numbers of the "important" people in case of emergency. If i couldnt reach anyone (and I left vm) then I would go home. No, I wouldnt quit my job over this, but I would voice my concern.

Simply let them know that it is irresponsible to expect an employee to show up to work on time which surely you would be repremanded for if you pulled that stunt. Tell them you expect to be paid from the time they expect you there and that it is not your doing or should be your expense that they are not there to have the door open for you to work. In addition...you may have to simply wait until they show up and explain this to them then. Demand that they pay you even for the time you waited for them. You are there to do a job. It's not your concern that they are not there to do theirs even if they are the owner.

You didn't say what KIND of work it was. Retail? I'd wait until the regular time people come in. I'd call the boss and ask what's going on.
Would I quit? No. If they want me to leave, they will have to say it to my face.

Do you really want the job. You are only an employee, not the boss...so if you're not there when the boss shows up....then it is time to begin looking for another job. It is not for you to dictate to the boss...he pays your wages...on time or late...he is the boss.
