Similarities: family-centered; stress on the importance of social harmony

Differences:
In general, Japanese Americans try to assimilate into mainstream American society, or more precisely, white society while maintaining their cultural heritage and ethnic identities. Those Japanese Americans are sometimes called "banana" - yellow on the outside, white on the inside. ("Banana" is a generally derogatory term, similar in usage to "Oreo" among African Americans.)

On the other hand, Chinese Americans are community-oriented. They aren't so eager to assimilate into mainstream society but develop their own community, Chinatown, in which they provide their fellow Chinese, especially new arrivals, the social support networks that aren't available to them in American society. As a result, Chinatown residents are less educated, less skilled in English, and significantly poorer than Japanese Americans in general.
