I have this white sweater with red letters on it. I have this black nasty stain on it, in the back wear the sweater is completely white. I have been trying to get it out for at least a year and nothing has worked. What's worse is I have no idea what the stain is. It looks like oil, but I don't know. I need to get it out, Please help. Also I was thinking can you just dye a certain area on clothing without the dye going everywhere?

If you could add information to your original post/question about what material your sweater is made of then you may get more helpful answers.

If your sweater is made of cotton then you'll have a much better chance of getting the stain out. Have you been drying the sweater in a dryer or just by laying it out & air drying it? The heat from a dryer does a good job of "setting" stains; which makes it much, much harder (if not impossible) to completely remove stains.

I've had very good success by soaking clothes in a very strong solution of Clorox 2 & landry detergent. Sometimes I've had to soak the item for 3-5 days while scrubbing the stain a few times each day.

If your stain is oil based you may want to try soaking the spot with Dawn dish washing liquid & water. Scrub/rub the stain for a few minutes at a time throughout a few day soaking period. This may break up the oily part of the stain. Then follow up with the Clorox 2/detergent soak & scrub as described above.

If the above 2 suggestions don't work (and your sweater is NOT some type of polyester) then you could finally try using a regular Clorox Bleach & laundry detergent soak/scrub routine for up to a few days.

My final suggestion is to never, no not ever, use a dryer to dry a stained item of clothing. At least not until you've gotten the stain out. The heat of a dryer may perminantly "set" stains in the fibers.

Drape the sweater over something so that the front will not be affected by using diluted bleach on the stain. There are also dry cleaners that can possibly remove it for you without too much cost.

If Oxyclean doesn't get it out, you can try Dryel, a home dry-cleaning system for about $10.00 (starter kit)-available in the laundry section of your favorite store.

It contains a bottle of spot lifter or spot remover that might help.
Since you say it's been in there about a year, most likely the stain is set.

I wouldn't mess with any home remedies, I'd take it to a dry cleaner and let them attempt to get it out. They'll most likely be successful.
And it will probably cost less than $10.00.

I don't know if you've tried this, but try bleaching the black stain. Just don't get it on the red lettering. Clorox has out a bleach pen gel thing that keeps the bleach from going eveywhere. YOu might want to try that.
