A wooden baseball bat and an aluminum bat have the exact same shape, size and mass. Aluminum is much denser than wood. Explain how the two bats could be the same size and mass.

how could they be the same if they have a different density?

thank you

An aluminum bat is hollow, a wood bat is solid.

They have the same *external* shape.

We know the wooden bats are solid wood, so the aluminum bats must not be solid aluminum. The aluminum bat's core is either hollow or some other less dense material. Foam would be a good candidate. It would help absorb and dissipate the shock of contacting a 90mph baseball that an aluminum bat would otherwise do less well than a wooden bat.

If we make two bats , aluminum and wood, we can make them if the same density. Like for example, we need to produce bat in a very thin material or make inside hollow and whatever. All the solution and option is on the aluminum bat. Wooden bat is constant.

im very sorry but you need to check that question with your teacher cuz i think it is wrong.

density = mass x volume

therfore it would be impossible for the two
to the same density if they had same mass and volume

the only way they could have the same density is if the volume or the mass of either varied

eg. for bat
density = mass X volume
mass = 56
volume =10

ther fore denisty = 56 X 10 = 560

for aluminium bat
density = mass X volume
mass= 70
volume=8

ther fore density =70 X 8 =560

Density is not about the size or mass of any particular object, but the "weight".

For example, oil is less dense than water, that's why oil floats on water. The other example would be comparing helium & air. You can fill 2 balloons with the same amount of the 2 gases & helium being of smaller density than air will cause the balloon to rise.

the respond is they have not got the comparable density. Aluminum bats are hollow. This additionally explains why an aluminum bat is waiting to deliver a ball greater desirable than its comparable wood bat. The flexing of the aluminum acts as a spring, compressing and liberating greater desirable power into the ball on the area of strike.
