i would suggest, instead of just an email pal, that you find a chat mate. in that way you'd be able to talk to them in a personal level, sending and receiving of messages are in an instant thus you can really gauge their personality. it's a simple as joining some chat rooms such as in yahoo messenger, depending on your interest you can join any room (they are categorized just like how the questions in Q&A are). in this way, you can also easily filter out people you want to talk and the topics you can discuss about.
I and my friends have tried this long time ago and we really gained a lot of friends whom later we'd even meet personally and go out with. it's even funnier how we'd have some common friends and common experience to share about. =)
