According to NFL rules, a giant mudwrestling match between all the teams' cheerleaders follows to determine, in a win or die fashion which teams make it to the playoffs :-)

It would come down to games (won/loss record) vs. other teams in your conference and then total points for and points against. They would rank them from best to first and the top 12 would get in the playoffs.

There are tiebreakers to be applied - head to head competition, point differentials, record in divisional play and more. good question but very unlikely.
