A movie might be a better choice...if you insist on threatre I would suggest a well reviewed comedy or one on tour proven successful. Keeps the feeling "up" and a nice walk afterward in the park or to a coffee house or neighborhood tavern...giving plenty of allowance to get to know one another.

Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under the Elms." It's great. It's four and a half hours long, and everybody dies at the end.
Seriously, there are a whole lot of variables. Does she go to the theatre regularly or is she a neophyte? Consider her personal tastes. Does she like the classics, comedy, musicals, drama...? Lastly, where do you live? What options do you have?
A good rule of thumb is: go for quality. If someone who hasn't been to the theatre much is forced to sit thru a bad play, they're a whole lot less likely to go back. Secondly, look for material to which she can relate. My company did a production of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Isn't Enough," and each night the audience was packed with single, black women. Look for something she can get her teeth into.
Tennessee Williams' early work is a good bet. Some women seem to really respond to "Summer and Smoke." Don't know why. Probably that whole duality of man thing. Good luck

There are many great things to go and watch. It all depends greatly on where you live and how long you are willing to commute to get to the theatre. Also before you splash out on the tickets etc you’ll want to consider what kind of theatre your girlfriend would enjoy. The choice is quite vast from ballet to musicals, to comedy and drama plays.
I would recommend the west end of London if you are able to get there. There’s always something good on and it’s perfect if you want to make her feel special, as there’s always an exiting atmosphere, and it gives you both the chance to dress up a bit.
Also if you search on the internet for the west end you’ll normally find the tickets at reduced prices and therefore get better seats for less money.
There are some good musicals that have been running for over 18 years at the west end and these she’s likely to enjoy as many before her have; ‘The phantom of the opera’ or ‘Les Miserables’
Or you can go for a musical that has been done at the cinema and therefore likely to be familiar like ‘Chicago’ or ‘Footloose’.
I do have to strongly recommend ‘The lion King.’ The costumes, the music and the dancing are all amazing. It’s magical and it’s a well known childhood movie so I would say highly likely to be a hit. If you do go for this one I would strongly suggest good seats where you can see the stage well, the costumes are great.

Have to agree with Vicky...if u are in London then Woman in Black is a great play to take a date to.....still original.....good with company....good for scares and grabbing on..plus great location...for something different go to Sarastros restaurant for pre and post theatre meal....for gods sake...dont take her to phantom...mamma mia.....etc....at least try and show some originality and effort and that you have thought about it ...for a big spectacle take her to see either "Wicked" or "Billy Eilliot" but if its just the drama....then "Woman in Black" at the Fortune Theatre...or "The 39 Steps" at the Criterion....

You can go and see Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre at Covent Garden, it's very scary and a guaranteed way to get her to hold onto you! I've been to see it twice and going for a third time in October. You can get cheap deals to see it through lastminute.com and also if you have an Oyster card you can get 2 for 1 tickets. I'd reccommend it!!

I wouldn't take your girlfriend to a play but rather a musical. She would enjoy that much better. I would recommend The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown

Where are you? Somewhere in the UK, I'd assume (from your spelling)? My favorite date ever was Twelfth Night done in an outdoor theater. Massive productions are always impressive, of course, so you may want to go that way.
