I am a non-smoker and really hate the smell. However, I do know courteous smokers and since smoking in the workplace is illegal (in US anyway), I believe you are discriminating and that is BAD. On the other hand, often times smokers take more and longer breaks to smoke, so if I detected the smell of smoke on them, I would be firm about the number and lengths of breaks that are taken and that the policy is strictly enforced. I would also impress upon them WHERE smoking is allowed and where it is NOT.

You should not assume that smokers are not very bright. Each person is an individual with their own set of circumstances and no-one is perfect. Smoking is a chemical addiction and very hard to get rid of. Do you make the same assumption about people who are overweight? You are doing your organisation a disservice because you are ensuring that it is not necessarily getting the best person for the job, purely because of your prejudice against smokERS rather than smokING.
It also sounds to me as if you are allowing your apparently obsessive hatred of smokers to lead you to make assumptions that may be false. How do you know they smoke because they smell of cigarettes? Perhaps they stopped off for a coffee before the interview and unfortunately chose a place that had a few smokers in at the time. I know I've been out to lunch with a colleague and returned to work reeking of cigarettes - but I've never smoked in my life.
I think you definitely need to have a re-think on this.

Hello I am a smoker but i must say i am a considerate smoker. I would never go to a job interview smelling like smoke. Hate is a strong word to use against anyone especially just b/c they smoke. I do think it is wrong to discriminate against a person JUST b/c they smoke. What about their skill and experience? But it is not bright to go to a job interview smelling of smoke regardless of whether the interviewer is a person like you or someone who doesn't mind.

hmm...prejudice is not a good way to interract with someone.you should really get over it.i understand that you hate smokers...cigars are really unhealthy, to the smoker, to those around him, to the air...but it's their choice, their mistake and they will pay for it.you don't have to bring justice upon them.what does smoking have to do with intelligence?i have seen smokers that were like wow!...most of my math teachers were smokers.artists smoke.writers smoke.wheteher they pick it up from their parents, friends or whatever, it doesn't mean that these people are any different from non-smokers...what you can do, is let those people get the job if they deserve it,and get rules against smoking in the office bulding.if they need to smoke they can have a special smoking spot.p.s. i am a smoker. :)

You are suppose to do your job. I presumed that you work for other people's organization too. Don't you think one day you got fired and have to seeking for the new job too. Remember people need food, money for their living. Your duty is to find the best staff not to find out whether they are smokers or not...(because you hate it.) if it doesn't against the company's rules & regulations. Please don't step over people's right or theirs preferences. The smokers are smart enough for not to smoking in the office or public.

I'm not a smoker, but that's the most ignorant thing i have heard.I understand not liking smoke, but to judge a person solely on that ,makes you a type of bigit.I'm sure you have some type of habbit, others hate. What's that saying, people in glass house shouldn't throw stones.

What? What? You think just smokers make bad employees? You'd be surprised what others do on the job when no one is looking.

Maybe you should get another job yourself.. If you are a hiring manager and you discriminate against smokers, then you have a bigger problem.. that's terrible...

As long as they don't know that you didn't hire them because of their smoking I think that it is OK! I don't like smokers either. I think that they are weak minded too!

That may actually be illegal. You are supposed to be hiring based upon job qualifications, not personal preference.
