It originated in the run-up to Lent. The idea was to use up all the sugar, flour, milk etc. in the house before the fasting and abstinence .

It's actually called Shrove Tuesday. It's traditionally Pancake Dya as it's the last day before lent - so people used up all their luxuries in the house - flour, eggs, milk - so they weren't tempted during lent.

This i know for sure, having learnt it as a child.
Before lent all the people were preparing to fast, or at least cut down on rich food, so they used up all the good ingredients like FLOUR,SUGAR, EGGS, BUTTER to prepare on the day b4 the start of lent. The day b4 lent is SHROVE TUESDAY, OR PANCAKE DAY AS WE KNOW IT.These ingredients made PANCAKES, a real treat in the old days.

As already said...tis the day before the Christian lead up to Easter, Lent. Fasting is done over a six week period. So all things ready to go out of date had to be used up before Ash Wednesday

Sounds like "Fat Tuesday" the day you go nuts and feast before Lent. It is also my kids favorite day, they get whatever they want to eat!
