My husband started laughing at me when I called it a basketball goal. Isn't goal correct though? I always thought hoop was slang for it. Please let me know because we have a bet going.

They are interchangeable terms and neither is wrong. Goal would be the more formal term while hoop leans towards being slang.

The metal ring that holds the net is the hoop. The entire structure (backboard, hoop, net, post) is collectively called the goal.

Why don't they call illegally blocking a shot "hoop tending"?

The formal term is goal, however, hoop is used as slang. Check out this website. I cut and paste a section where goal is used from that website (read the caption to the right of the picture).

The 13 Original Rules of Basketball
Dr. James Naismith declared: The object of the game is to put the ball into your opponent's goal. This may be done by throwing the ball from any part of the grounds, with one or two hands, under the following conditions and rules.

Dr. Naismith invented basketball and in those days soccer and rugby were dominant sports and he used goal, not hoop. The first goal was actually a peach basket.

I hate to break it, but hoop is the correct term. It is only slang if you use it as a verb, such as "lets go hoop it up" instead of "let's go play basketball". Basketball goal is more a term for a made basket or field goal.

Hoop is the correct answer, whenever some goes out to play basketball they don't go out to shoot some goals, they go out to shoot some hoops.
