I always knew that pap tests for HPV were an important part of visiting the gynocologist, and that the virus could lead to cervical cancer.

What I did not know (perhaps foolishly, but I was never told this) is that HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. What is worse is that men can easily be carriers of this disease and never know, because there are no symptoms and they are not tested for it. So a man carrying this disease can pass it on to women unknowingly. And because women infected with HPV also have no symptoms, you will not know if you have it unless you are tested regularly. This is a big deal because it can lead to cancer.

A friend of mine is dealing with this right now and I was shocked to learn how easily it can be transmitted without anyone ever detecting it.

Get tested, ladies. Cancer is no joke. And cervical cancer can prevent you from having children. You should be having a Pap test for HPV once every year.

I know from experience. I was sexually active at the age of sixteen, but I never got a pap done until I turned nineteen, because I was too scared. It came back positive for HPV. I had to have a biopsy of my cervix, and that came back as a high risk for cancer. I had to have a procedure done called a LEEP, where the took a tiny instrument and cut all of the infected area of my cervix out. It has been three months since I had the LEEP done, and the test came back to show that they were able to remove all of the infected cells, and that I am fine now. I have to have four more paps in the course of the next year, and I have to be monitored very closely, so they can tell if any of the virus is coming back. It is a horrible experience, and I suggest that if you are sexually active, that you get a pap immediately, and have an annual one every year!

Happy to see you spreading the news. Last yr, I was told I had HPV....never even had heard about it...days after my pap, I had a call to come back in, I had cervical cancer. I am 33 and was scared to death, I was in the hospital within 2weeks having surgery. So yes....Go get checked every yr. I know have to go every 3 months.
Also I had only ever had sex with my hubby, so....it does not matter how many or how many times....oral can also spread this.

I see the commercial all the time on tv and I have been telling people about this because it is dangerous and no one thinks that you can get cancer from a virus.
