The star piece that holds the blade broke off. I ordered a new mandrel housing shaft to replace it, but it appears that I need the blade to create a counterforce to remove the nut at the top. The nut sits just above the pulley. Any ideas on how I can hold the shaft to create 50 ft. lbs of torque to remove the nut?

I have a strap wrench or flywheel tool - I put around the pulley.
It looks like a breaker bar with a 1 inch wide nylon strap.
You can get them off the tool trucks - I get mine from Matco and Snap-on.
I also have been known to use my belt - in a pinch.

Try grasping the pulley with a strap wrench. One small enough to be able to fit into the pulley then clamp it tight,You must remember it is a reverse thread on the nut and you will probably want to soak it in solvent, overnight, with Liquid Wrench.
You may have to use an Impact gun in the FOWARD motion to remove it and reversely to put it back on.

Can't you wedge a piece of wood between the blade and the mower housing that will lock the blade in place to allow you to remove the screw? That's how I do it.
