... and is it safe to produce at home with no special safeguards?

The chemical has certain hydrophobic qualities that my 10-year-old son is interested in. If possible, I'd like to help him experiment with it.

I have no special training in chemistry, beyond a high school course and my own tinkering with a home lab when I was a kid myself.

Well the easiest was is with trimethyl silane chloride which is will try and eat your lungs. I don't advocate tinkering with stuff like this at home unless you have a hood setup. I had a reaction go badly and got a lungfull of this stuff. It's nothing to play with and I have the training in chemistry.
