Reboot the ipod

Hold switch to on and back off then press menu and select simultaneously and hold for a bit, and on release the ipod should reboot.

good luck

You can reset it. Depending on what model you have a Nano for example needs the follwing to reset it:

turnn the 'hold' button off and on (so the red isn't showing)
hold the menu and select buttons down together until you see the apple logo. Leave it to cycle through the reset.

This usually cures all ills.

If you don't have a Nano - trip over to apple.com and run a search in their support pages on resetting an ipod - lots of info there.

mine does that all the time... I had to get on the itunes website and look up the directions on how to reset my ipod .. it gives u instructions how do to it. I have to reset mine every now and again then you have to reload all your music back onto the ipod bc resetting it erasing everything... but after i did that it started working again. try that before u get a new one. resetting works for me every time.

If you can't reset it then just do what my friend did... keep the iPod on till the battery runs out and it switches off. Then you can just switch it on again, and all will be well.
