Because they're stupid. And to the person above who said that american football came 1st - football has been played here in the uk since the middle ages. How then, if america was not discovered until 1492 did american football come first? Was it first played by the Native American Indians? Did they have inter-tribe championships?? No!!

When the Football Association attempted to standardize football rules in England in 1863, they prohibited carrying the ball, which caused a split with the rugby-oriented clubs, who wound up leaving and forming their own league. To distinguish between the two styles of play, it become common in to refer to the non-hand-using league as "Association Football", commonly abbreviated in the press as "socca'". The modified spelling "soccer" started appearing in the British press as early as 1895.
So, to answer the question specifically, we got that stupid word from the British press. (Isn't it awful that one of us foriegn [sic] "clowns" knows the answer when you don't? :) )

Actually I think it's only us Americans that call it Soccer. Everyone else calls it 'footy' or 'football' ('futbol'), it's all the same game though. We have "American Football" which I think is the most stupid name, when the ball is mostly thrown to one another, and hardly ever kicked.

Because we already have a sport called football. We are Americians, so we can call it whatever we want. We have freedom of speach.
And you call us stupid for calling it soccer when you call it "Footy"???
Footy sounds like a baby sock.
