The mancs are obsessed with scousers, any game they are playing at any time anywhere in the world the will sing about how much they hate Liverpool FC and how much they hate scousers. It is born out of jealousy, they claim to be the biggest club in the world when the simple fact of the matter is they are not even the biggest club in the North West of England. Liverpool FC's 18 league Championships and 5 european cups speak for themselves. The club and it's fans feel no need to be little Man United and there support as they quite simply do a perfect a job of it themselves. Like Gary 'I hate scousers' Neville they are quite simply small time compared to circles that Liverpool fc move in. In fact United will always be in the shadow of Liverpool FC and it eats away at the club and it's support every single day of there lives.
As regards your other question regarding Rooney it just shows the level of intelligence of your average Manc.

I never thought of that. Mind you, I've never been to Old Trafford so have never heard it. I guess in their view, if a Scouser is doing a good thing, it's ok. It eliminates them from the stereotype that is implied in that chant. By playing for Man Utd, Rooney to the fans becomes an honourary Manc

This is because football fans are fickle, so they take the p**s out of scousers - their nearest biggest town rivals. BUT, they have a scouser who plays and scores for them, which brings on forgivenss or forgetfullness for his roots. They could have a whole team of scousers and would still sing the song but chant their names - it is not about the individual, but the teams of liverpool.
It is that simple :)

Because Rooney got out of the slums so he's not a scouser.

That is true but Rooney is an honorary Manc now. He must have known about the feud between mancs and scousers before he signed for them, but he still chose to sign for UTD.

It's to do with ancient rivalries: Manchester and Liverpool do not get along in general, and that is mirrored in the footballing world.
It's probably a similar case to the British and Germans (or British and Americans). It's hating them as a whole, but liking individuals. Personally I hate 'America' and many things it stands for, but all Americans that I have known personally I've really liked. I'm not sure I quite hate Germany, but again I'm not too fond of it, but I've still liked every German I've known.

Because liverpool and man u are rivals. It all started I think when fergi took over man u, and said that they will be knock liverpool off the top. This was in the early 1980s. But yeah, those damm scums. Liverpool rocks!!
YNWA!!
edit, but yeah, it has nothing to do with rooney blue noise (everton player). It is all to do with Liverpool! Thats why Liverpool v Man U is one of the best watch games around!

I'm pretty sure Rooney couldn't care less. He's on about £40 million a week.
