I'm not sure if he was better than Johnny Cash, but he was certainly good enough to earn that Oscar. He should have won it. That Reese did, and he didn't, is a shame.

Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix were both good in the movie. I have heard this postulated before, and so I got the soundtrack and compared them to Johnny singing the same ones. I got more emotion from Johnny Cash, but more technical notes from Phoenix. Also, one of the biggest things about Walk The Line is that it had much better Sound Equipment, and a much better band.
I think the Tennessee Three was the worst band to ever go on to make it big.

I contemplated this question when I watched the film because I thought Joaquin was great.

I tried to reason that perhaps it was just that recording equipment and sound quality is so much better these days that it made him sound better that Johnny Cash.

However, I think I was kidding myself. Joaquin is probably better if I'm honest. And I thought Reese Witherspoon was really good too by the way.

It might have something to do with the sound recording computer software that is available nowadays for enhancing his voice(could the Spice girls really sing?).
It was an exceptionally good film though!

The first poster half got it.

Johnny Cash wasn't a prior american idol winner with great range and no character. He was great _because_ of the emotion he put into the songs, and the texture of his voice. Of course, its probably easier to put emotion into songs when you wrote them yourself ...
